There is a phrase in gravel that is more common than any basic greeting: “What tires are you running?” is the equivalent of “Hi, how are you?” in the world of gravel. It’s a deeply personal question for some gravel riders, so much so that they prefer to keep it a secret. Others will post a bike reveal the week leading into a race complete with a full YouTube video, Instagram Reel, and TikTok live.

While the conversation can quickly become oversaturated, there is a reason that so many riders ask. Bike and tire choice is one of the most important things in gravel. One could argue that it’s even more important than showing up to the start line with good legs. A gravel rider could be in the form of their life, but if they get stuck in the mud 15 miles into the race, their day is done.

Gravel forces you to make a real decision every time you sign up for a race. The terrain changes, the weather changes, and the distance changes. Some races are 50 miles in the dry, others are 200 miles in the pouring rain. Choose the wrong equipment and you won’t just be slower–you’ll be walking.

I’ve spent years analyzing, racing, and writing about gravel, and there is no more common question than: what bike and tires should I run? The honest answer is always the same: it depends. But “it depends” only helps if you know what it depends on. So let’s break down the factors that go into a smart gravel setup — geometry, tread, pressure, terrain, weather, distance — and use one of the most unpredictable races in America to show just how complicated this decision can get: core4, in Iowa City.

This is where a varied-terrain race gets complicated. Chunky versus soft gravel – Chunky, embedded rock rewards wider tires, lower pressure, and tougher casings. It’s slow and demanding no matter what you run, but the wrong tire here means flats. Soft, loose gravel — the kind that shifts under you — rewards width and tread more than pressure. You need surface area and grip to keep your front wheel from washing out in corners and on climbs.

Rain is the bigger equipment variable.
