For some of you, ‘cross is already here.

It’s crazy to me that, in many places, cyclocross (CX) season has already begun. But then again, I was doing group the Shootout in December, which is basically an hour-long road race with a hill sprint at the end. It’s fair to say that if you race CX in August, you’re are crazy as us roadies who race in January. So maybe we’re not all that different.

Pro Tip: Beware that winning the road group ride in December is probably not a good sign for your upcoming road season.

While I don’t enjoy CX in August myself, I sure do love it in the fall. The cool, crisp air, the ice cold beer, the pumpkin pie and falling leaves…wait, what are we talking about? Oh yeah, cyclocross.

The mud and grit, the twists and turns, the steep climbs and off-camber sections, taking a shortcut through the tape and destroying as many plastic stakes as possible. Oh wait, I’m getting off track again. You’re not supposed to destroy the plastic stakes, like an unjust demolition derby.

So as the weather turns to Fall and the leaves begin to… fall, we can trade in our slick tires for some knobby ones, hop onto our saddle with a running start, and take a beer hand-up when the officials aren’t looking.

CX season is here.
